This was my first large painting (24×36) on a wrapped canvas. I painted the sky first, then the mountains, field and cloud. The mountains were inspired by the area around Van Horn, TX where the elevation is the highest in the state at around 5,000 feet. It hung on the wall for over a year because I knew it needed something more, but couldn't figure out what. One day I got the idea to add a tractor pulling the storm cloud over the parched field. I pulled it off the wall and added it. I loved the result and promptly named the painting West Texas Ingenuity!

Ship Rock

Origin: Savannah, GA. Destination: Salt Lake City. I-20 West to Dallas, then 287 N to Amarillo and I-40 W to Gallup. Turn north on 491 and you will come to it. It's a long straight road. The mountain appears as a blip on the horizon at first. The longer you drive, the larger it looms. Within a few miles, you begin to appreciate the massive size of the rock. There's a pull-off right next to it where you can stop and stare straight up its cliffs. You don't want to leave. You could just decide to call it home and stay forever. No further miles or goals are necessary. This could be home at last... home on the high plains.

Inspired directly by the work of Chili Thom. It brings to mind the giant timber of Oregon and the towering silence of the Sequoia National Forest, but the electric color and bold scale were all Chili.
